About hackint

hackint is an IRC-based communication network closely tied to the European hacker community and the Chaos Computer Club (CCC). It hosts conference channels (like the Chaos Communication Congress), CTF teams, and security research discussions.

Around 10,300 concurrent users and 500 channels, making it relatively small but influential. Only around 15 channels have more than 100 users. Connect at irc.hackint.org on port 6697 with TLS.

Supports multiple transports: native IRC, Tor (.onion), Matrix, XMPP/Jabber, and DN42. Authentication is exclusively via SASL (PLAIN, EXTERNAL, SCRAM-SHA-256, CertFP) since February 2026; NickServ IDENTIFY is deprecated. Offers ChanServ, NickServ, and GroupServ. Webchat is available at chat.hackint.org.

Legal requirements: channels must comply with German and Dutch law. Anyone is welcome, but the culture is rooted in the hacker scene.

Bridging to Matrix

The bridging policy is problematic. True opt-in means users actively choose to expose their messages to Matrix.

A blanket bridge without consent violates the principle of informed control over one’s data.

If users cannot opt out, it’s effectively mandatory surveillance.

The hacker community’s ethos centers on informed consent and autonomy - silent bridging contradicts that fundamentally. Either implement proper per-user opt-in or don’t bridge at all.
